Bodegas Mayor de Migueloa is a synonym of nobility and tradition. Hidden among the ancient, winding streets of Laguardia, to enter the old house that is home to both the restaurant and its winery and guesthouse is to travel into the past. Time seems to stop at Mayor de Migueloa, except for the house wine which, harvest after harvest, continues to capture the flavour of the passing of time, and of course for the food served in the restaurant which, as it is seasonal, gives off the smells of the earth and living nature of the Álava landscape. Though the palace was restored in 1988 to convert it into a pioneer of Spanish wine tourism, the original building of 1619 still has its thick stone walls and ancient beams. Thus, the place represents the living history of wine, producing it in a place where it can not only be seen, smelt and tasted, but also touched and heard. Inside the palace you feel the cold, even though it is protected by the warmth of the stones, and feel the calm silence that comes from the thick walls of the cellars, combined with the sound of the people setting around the tables in the restaurant to share some unique moments. It is precisely these feelings that show how Mayor de Migueloa preserves the original appearance of the place, combined with modern-day comfort that turns the palace into a cosy place. One of its greatest attractions, apart from the delicious food and the hospitality it offers, is the cellar dating from 1919, where the house wines are laid down. The heart of the winery lies 10 metres down, making one feel small before the unceasing passing of the years, but you can also experience a sensation of peace and comfort, contrasting with the strong excitement and emotion that comes from penetrating to the core and essence of the winemaking tradition. Visits: Winery tour with tasting of the house wines and a tapa. This lasts about 45 min. Times: Saturdays and Sundays 11.00am and 12.00am / Other times on request. Price: €5 per person Tasting courses: If you'd like to discover the world of Rioja wine, we recommend this activity, in which you'll discover the secrets of wine... Prices and times: by arrangement
